We study how marine animals and microbes make a living, how they shape their environments, and how they respond to a changing world.

About the Lab

  • Broadly speaking, we study animal and microbial physiology, biochemistry, and biogeochemistry. We study:

    • Physiological and biochemical adaptation.

    • How animal-microbial symbioses contribute to ocean productivity.

    • How and why microbes make and break down minerals.

  • We also develop novel “open-design” instruments such as underwater mass spectrometers and microbial samplers. We work to make these tools available to the broadest research community, with the goal of building a stronger marine science workforce.

We get to explore inner space — that is the deep sea — and we want to enable others from all walks of life to be a part of that exploration
