By training, I am a deep-sea ecologist and microbial oceanographer. My work pulls from various aspects of ecophysiology, genomics, and geochemistry to answer big picture questions with broad ecological and evolutionary significance. With that said, I am fascinated by the balance/imbalance of Earth’s systems, specifically the metabolic contributions linked with microbial community assembly and active nutrient flux by diel vertical migrators. Altogether, my work focuses on the cornerstone organismal components of oceanic biogeochemical cycles and seeks to understand how host-microbe interactions (e.g., gut microbiome) influence these cycles and how these cycles and organisms equilibrate and respond to environmental perturbation.

I pursued a career in science because of an innate curiosity for exploring the unknown. Not surprisingly, exploring the deep, dark ocean has captivated me for my whole life and has been one of the most fulfilling endeavors that I’ve had. And in doing so, I inadvertently discovered a piece of myself. I have learned that doing science is so much more than using shiny tools to answer research questions. Science is about the journey that we take with diverse groups of people that have unique perspectives, and I am amazed at how much can be discovered about the world and ourselves from each study we embark on. This is why open-mindedness and peer mentorship are at the core of my scientific ethos, and I believe this creates an environment conducive for doing science.
